Battery Park City Authority retained Stalco as general contractor for its new community center, operated by a non-profit organization Asphalt Green. The facility is targeting LEED Platinum certification.
Located at the base of two high-rise residential towers, the community center encompasses two cellar levels and two above-street levels. The first level houses the main entrance, reception desk, lobby, cafeteria, 156-seat theater/auditorium, and an exit to a 16,000-square foot terrace, located on the roof of the lower level of the center. Asphalt Green’s second floor features a culinary center/teaching kitchen, classrooms, and offices. |
The first cellar level houses a six-lane, 45-feet-wide, 76-feet-long heated lap pool, and a heated 14-feet-wide, 31-feet-long-teaching and exercise pool with a movable bottom to allow for low water for youngest and disabled swimmers or deeper water for older classes, a 90x50' basketball court featuring a movable divider wall, a 3,500-square foot fitness center, full-service locker rooms with steam room, and storage and equipment rooms. The sub-cellar houses mechanical equipment, pool systems and plumbing, and storage rooms. |
The east façade features the most visually striking architectural element of the center – a 550-foot curved wall of illuminated fritted glass panels. The interior finishes include metal panel and plaster over concrete ceilings, polished concrete flooring, and sports hardwood floor inside the gymnasium. |
The Stalco team coordinated all construction activities, including deliveries, materials storage, and infrastructure construction with contractors working on the residential towers above the center. |
