Borough of Manhattan Community College Aquatics Center
199 Chambers Street, New York, NY
Client:City University of New York
Architect:M.P. Engineers
Size:12,000 s/f
Cost:$7.2 million
Stalco performed extensive repairs and interior renovations to the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s (BMCC) aquatics center. The facility features a 220,000-gallon, 4,575-sq. ft. pool with deep and shallow sections; a swimming competition area with digital timing devices; an office; a large deck; bleachers; and a storage room.
Stalco replaced or repaired the steampipes, made extensive concrete repairs on the south and west sides of the pool, and upgraded the HVAC systems. The crews also installed a new UV water-treatment system and a state-of-the-art water micro-filtration system that reduces maintenance and ensures cleaner water.
Crews removed all of the existing tiles in the pool and on the walkways and installed new, 2"x2" tile from Daltile in off-white. The team also created the BMCC’s logo on the wall from tiles in the school’s official colors of blue and orange. To install the tile, Stalco used a waterproof membrane first, then a setting bed, then a thin-set, the tiles, and then grout. The crews tiled a total of 15,000 sq. ft., including in the pool and the surfaces around it. Newly installed equipment includes diving platforms, two ADA-compliant lifts to accommodate swimmers in wheelchairs, and a competition-level timing system with touchpads.
The work was performed during the school year, in an occupied building, so both security of access and construction safety were of the utmost importance. Stalco fenced off the entire construction area, making sure students and faculty could not enter the site. The crews created construction access by removing two large window panes.
