Stalco served as general contractor for the extensive restoration and renovation of the landmark Pier A building in Manhattan’s Battery Park area. Built in 1886, Pier A is the oldest surviving pier in New York City. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Historic American Engineering Record. The project is aiming at a LEED Silver certification. |
The assignment encompassed a complete interior renovation, restoration of the exterior and roof, extensive structural repairs, and installation of new concrete slabs and access ramps on the pier’s promenade. |
The exterior and base building work included replacement of deteriorated structural steel elements, off-site Dutch repairs to all windows, restoration of the exterior metal cladding and ornaments, roof repairs, and replacement of deteriorated concrete slabs that support the promenade. Stalco also performed repairs of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. |
The interior renovation preserved historic elements, including wood veneers, plaster cornice work and moldings, and a granite fireplace. The interiors house a restaurant, a retail outlet, and offices. |
The building features a new geothermal HVAC system submerged in the Hudson River beneath the pier. Stalco constructed a cage and piles that support the underwater cooling unit. |
The restoration’s most complex task was renovation and replication of the ornamental metal cladding on the building’s exterior. Stalco retained a team of European artisans to perform this task. |
