Skolnick Architecture Size: 5,500 s/f Cost: $2.8 million At 5,500 sq. ft., the newly named Jackie and Hal Spielman Children’s Library is fully modernized and slightly larger than the former, outdated children’s section. The Children’s Library serves more than 7,600 children and parents throughout the year. Stalco demolished the entire children’s area and then constructed a smart new design, furnishings, and technology to help children of all ages learn, explore, and create. The new space features a high number of custom elements that aim at stimulating children’s curiosity and desire to learn. All work took place while the rest of the library was in operation, so much care was taken to minimize noise and dust. The layout evolves around the “Tree of Knowledge,” a colorful central icon that provides the space with a playful identity and an intuitive wayfinding device. This feature is a brightly colored floor-to-ceiling “tree” with aluminum branches and decal roots on the floor that lead to various programmatic sections. The leaf and branch motifs denote “Play,” “Think” (quiet study), “Listen” (music area), and “Connect” (a learning commons media area). © 2011-2021 Stalco Construction, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
