Riverhead Charter School
3685 Middle Country Road, Calverton, NY
Client: Riverhead Charter School
Architect: BBS Architects, Landscape Architects and Engineers
Size: 50,000 s.f.
Cost: $14.1 million
Stalco serves as the general contractor for the new, 500-student, 50,000-sq.-ft K-8 charter school. The program calls for a 22,700-sq.-ft., two-story classroom wing with 18 classrooms, a 5,740-sq.-ft. auditorium, a 1,200-sq.-ft. library; a music room, and art and science rooms; an 8,686-sq.-ft., two-story administration wing; and a kitchen wing.
The 5.8-acre site currently houses two conventional, pre-existing buildings and modular classrooms. During construction, these three structures will remain occupied. Once construction is completed, the modular classrooms will be demolished and the two existing conventional buildings will be converted into storage and miscellaneous use space.
The site will feature a play area with natural grass, trees, and ornamental lampposts. Site work will include a new 110-stall surface parking lot, a drop-off/pick-up loop, a new asphalt access roadway, an on-site sanitation system, and a new self-contained drainage system with catch basins.
The new school will be a hybrid of a conventional building section and a modular pre-fabricated section. The conventional section will include a long-span gymnasium/auditorium/cafeteria with a stage, as well as the main entrance atrium and the library reading area, both with large expanses of windows. All of the remaining sections will be modular.
The projectís logistical and technical challenges include coordination of two different construction methods in order to create a cohesive building, as well as building a new facility on a tight site containing a fully operational school.
