Scully Estate Suffolk County Environmental Education and Interpretive Center
550 South Avenue, Islip, NY
Client: Town of Babylon
Architect: Peter Caradonna Architects
Size: 7,000 s.f.
Cost: $723,000
Stalco renovated and converted the historic, 27-room Scully Estates mansion in Islip, NY, into the Suffolk County Environmental Interpretive Center. The firm served as general contractor for this project, which is currently in the LEED Silver CS 2.0 rating application review process.
Stalco renovated the first floor and main entrance, built a new half-mile access roadway and surface parking for 44 cars, and installed a new ADA lift, an on-site water treatment system and a brick boarder garden. The project incorporated energy efficient lighting fixtures and equipment, a water-saving plumbing system, and a host of post-consumer construction materials. The new roadway is surfaced with crushed, recycled concrete.
The project’s most innovative element was the 1,300-gallon-per-day Nitrex wastewater treatment and disposal system. The on-site treatment option was selected due to the distance to the municipal sewer line and the property’s proximity to both an ocean and a protected marsh. The LEED-compliant treatment process includes the initial nitrification followed by the de-nitrification process in the Nitrex reactor, and then disposal of the treated water into the drain field.
