Stalco served as the general contractor for the extensive building systems upgrade at the Stony Brook University’s Computing Center. The university undertook the upgrades as part of a plan to increase the data center’s capacity, which amplified the cooling demand. The two new, independent cooling systems also provide the necessary redundancy. The computing center serves the entire university and a portion of the adjacent Stony Brook University Hospital. |
The project included the replacement of all mechanical/HVAC systems, interior renovations, and the construction of a new 700-sq.-ft. data center control room. The work included a new ductwork, interior renovations, and acoustical ceiling replacements. The new control room features an enclosed, modular glass wall system. |
Stalco installed a new chiller and a new dry cooler on the two-story building’s roof, which required structural reinforcements through new steel frame connected to the building’s structural system. The team also installed three new self-contained heat pump units in the basement and eight Liebert DS Down-flow glycol cooled CRAC units within the data center. One of the CRAC units was installed inside a UPS room that houses a diesel generator. |
The Computing Center remained operational during construction. To ensure the continuity of the center’s operation during the demolition and installation work, Stalco installed temporary outside cooling and heating units. |
