Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology retained Stalco Construction as general contractor for the $24-million expansion, interior and building systems renovation, and sound mitigation program. The sound mitigation work aimed at abating high levels of airplane noise from the nearby LaGuardia Airport. |
The project equipped Vaughn College with expanded and renovated educational and technical facilities; new physics, mechanical, structural, and materials testing laboratories; flight simulator rooms; new public spaces; a new, two-story library and learning center; upgraded building systems; and a robust sound insulation of roofs and exterior walls. The Stalco team also renovated an airplane maintenance hangar. |
The exterior walls feature three kinds of aluminum composite and metal panels. In the main building, the new windows feature tinted Wausau Triple-Glazed Airspaced Windows. The roof redesign included either removal of the pre-existing roofs and construction of new heavy concrete roofs with an air space to insulate against vibration, or addition of new concrete roofs above remaining original roofs. New roof systems feature structural slabs topped by rubber pads, then covered by half-inch plywood, followed by four-inch acoustical slabs that absorb the low-frequency noise from airplane engines. |
The project was delivered in six phases. Logistical challenges included work in an occupied educational facility, use of swing spaces, strict safety procedures, and close coordination of all construction activities with the college’s management. |
